I live on the prairie of South Eastern Minnesota with my husband and son, who just started kindergarten. We also have two dogs that we call Plato and Willow and a cat named Izabella.
I have led a very diverse life, thus far, as I have a BS degree in Animal Bio-science, continuing post-graduate education toward molecular medicine, and lots of time spent in plant/insect ecology.
I decided almost three years ago to leave the land of academia when we moved to New York City, NY for my husbands career and devote my time to our family. This is also the time where I re-ignited my love of the arts.
I come from a family of artists. My grandmother was a classically trained oil painter and illustrator. She taught me how to see the different elements that create an image. I painted and illustrated for a very long time until I no longer had the time.
Photography was introduced to me about seven years ago. I needed a quicker creative outlet and discovered that you could compose beautiful imagery through the lens. I wanted to learn to take photos of my son and joined Clickin Moms.
I became a Mentor and Instructor through Click Photo School, an online photography school. I have started traveling and teaching at various photography conferences throughout the United States. My goal is to solely teach and inspire others to pick up their camera and capture what they find meaningful.
I am drawn to natural light and use dark and light contrasts to create depth. I typically shoot environmental portraiture, lifestyle photography, fine art, nature, and love layering color and tones to create transitions in my imagery.
My gear is relatively simple! I love to say that because you do not need much to produce quality images.
Of course, I dream of more lenses and perhaps even off-camera flash (one day), but if you focus and learn to use what you have, your work becomes more meaningful because you have to bring more thought to how you capture the image.
My main camera body is a Nikon D750. I love to shoot with two main lenses. My first lens is the Nikon 50mm f/1.4. I use this lens a lot inside my home or for when I take birds eye view shots of my son at the kitchen table baking or creating his own art.
The second lens that I use is Sigma Art 85mm f/1.4. This is my favorite lens to use outside when capturing the environment. I love to shoot on the warmer side and it renders warmer tones straight out of the camera and I love the compression it gives.
Other lenses that I shoot with are creative optics from Lensbaby. I run to these lenses when I shoot nature macro photography or want an artistic portrait.
The lens that I use for my macro nature work is the Velvet 56mm f/1.6 lens. It is a manual lens and has a learning curve but creates such velvety smooth images with a narrow slice of focus where you want it.
I also use the Sol 45mm f/3.5 lens, this mimics a tilt shift lens with a fixed aperture but is much more simple and you can capture busy children with it while retaining sharpness!
